MATSUTOYO SATO Instructor of MatsutoyoKai
Matsutoyo Sato studied European music and opera from age 6 to16. At 16
she was formally exposed to Minyo, Shigin and the Biwa. At age 20 her
previous instructors encouraged her to train under Madame Matsuko Sato,
the late Iemoto-Grand Master of Sato Ryu in Tokyo, Japan as an apprentice
or "UchiDeshi". During this time she embraced a variety of traditional music
such as Minyo, Minbu, Naga-uta, Ha-uta, and Zoku Kyoku. Her talent, skill,
and determination allowed her to perform on Local TV, National TV, NHK,
Radio, and various stage performances throughout Japan and later in the United
States on the Gypsy Rose Lee Show, Karate Kid II and television commercials.
In 1966 she came to San Francisco, California, establishing Matsutoyo Kai,
a Minyo Group. She dedicated herself to teaching and spreading Japanese Folk
Music Culture to the Northern California area. Within 10-years, she had taught
and certified over 150 students. Spurred by this growth, Matsutoyo Kai
participated in numerous public performances, sharing their passion for Minyo.
At age 35 she moved to Los Angeles in hopes of grasping new hearts with this
Japanese Art, setting up classes and performances throughout Los Angeles,
Orange, and San Diego Counties. Today Matsutoyo Sato continues to teach and
pass on her knowledge, passion, and expertise in traditional Minyo. With the introduction of Minyo Station and its Fusion Style Japanese Folk Music, she has
created new interest in old traditions, bringing the EAST and WEST closer. |
